SAUGUS — Residents can dispose of their household hazardous waste in an environmentally responsible manner during a collection event on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Belmonte Middle School.
The rain-or-shine event will allow residents to dispose of a series of household waste products, including rubber cement, airplane glue, fiberglass resins, aerosol cans, photo chemicals, furniture polish, floor and metal polish, oven cleaner, drain and toilet cleaner, spot remover, rug and upholstery cleaner, hobby and artist supplies, photography chemicals, turpentine and chemistry sets.
Fuel, gasoline, kerosene, engine degreasers, brake fluid, carburetor cleaner, transmission fluid, car wax, polishes, driveway sealer, car batteries, antifreeze, cesspool cleaners, roofing tar, swimming pool chemicals, motor oil and car batteries will be accepted.
Workbench waste including oil-based paints, stains, varnishes, wood preservatives, paint strippers or thinners, solvent adhesives and lighter fluid can also be dropped off.
Residents can also bring yard waste, weed killer, chemical fertilizers, flea control products, moth balls, poisons, insecticides, herbicides, pesticides and fungicides.
Commercial waste, empty containers of trash, latex paint, radioactive waste, smoke detectors, infections and biological wastes, ammunition, fireworks, explosives, fire extinguishers and syringes will not be accepted
Participants should keep materials in their original containers, tighten caps and lids, and sort and pack products separately when transporting items to the collection site. Chemicals should never be mixed.
TVs, computers and car tires may be recycled at the drop off site on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Propane tanks may be disposed of for $5.

Residents can also visit the Inspectional Services Department at Town Hall.
Proof of residency is required.
