SAUGUS – Town employees helped bring in a little green by paying to get decked out in red, white and blue.Town Manager Andrew Bisignani said employees were invited to pay $5 for the opportunity to wear red, white or blue, including jeans, to work. The money raised is going toward replacing the flag holders stolen from veterans’ graves last month. Nearly 700 flag holders were stolen from Riverside Cemetery last month and sold for scrap. Three men were arrested in conjunction with the crime but the flag holders were destroyed. At $20 each, the Cemetery Commission estimated it could cost nearly $14,000 to replace the markers. The commission is working in conjunction with the Veterans Council with an eye at raising the money by Memorial Day.Selectman and veteran Stephen Castinetti said it is very important to him that when the Boy Scouts and other volunteers show up to place flags on the graves the day before Memorial Day Weekend, the markers be in place for them.56 employees helped out Monday by shelling out their $5 each and donning patriotic attire, raising a total of $280 for the cause.Bisignani said that all the money will go toward replacing the flag holders.”Those flag holders honor our veterans, policemen and firemen as well,” he said. “It is desecrating to their graves. We’re committed to replacing them.”He said that there are plans for more fundraising in the future, as well as securing donations from commercial establishments and individuals.
