NAHANT – A two-vehicle accident caused the inbound lane of the Nahant Causeway to be closed for approximately 30 minutes Sunday afternoon.According to Nahant Police Lt. Thomas Hutton, an SUV and a sedan collided around 4:30 p.m.Hutton said Richard Mariano, 17 Highland St., Rockport was driving a 1998 Lexus XE and Linda Pesco, 3 Baker Road, Nahant, was driving a Mercury Mountaineer when the two vehicles collided.Mariano was taken to Salem Hospital while Pesco was transported to Union Hospital.According to North Shore Medical Center Spokesman Casey Chuy, both individuals were treated and released. The speed limit on the Causeway where the accident occurred is 35 miles per hour and Hutton said speed may have been a factor.”Based on reports we received it appears one of the cars may have been speeding,” he said. “The investigation is ongoing by the state police with the assistance of the Nahant police.”Hutton said the station was flooded with calls when the accident occurred.”We had 15 to 20 calls on 911 and other lines,” he said. “The state police also received 911 calls and Saugus received one call. Callers indicated a serious motor vehicle accident on the inbound lane of the Causeway with injuries.”
