LYNN – Saturday’s West Lynn American-Saugus National District 16 all-star game started out with the look of the Major League equivalent of Nolan Ryan vs. Roger Clemens. In the first inning, the two pitchers combined for five strikeouts – three by WLA’s Brendon Devin and two by Saugus National’s Charlie Vozzella.Sadly, Devin felt something pop in his arm after that dominating first inning and had to give way to lefty shortstop Kyle Morrill to begin the second. The Nats took advantage of the sudden change in plans at East Lynn’s Volunteer Field and went on to a 10-0 four-inning win in the opening game of the Little League all-star tournament.Click here for a photo gallery. The game was halted after West Lynn American’s at-bat in the bottom of the fourth due to the 10-run rule. The Nats are back in action tonight (5:45) at Wyoma’s Reinfuss Field against East Lynn. West Lynn American falls to the losers’ bracket and isn’t back in action until next Monday against the loser of Tuesday’s Pine Hill/Wyoma game.”That was too bad,” said Saugus National coach John Furey. “You could see that the kid was really good. We took advantage and swung the bats well.””Nothing much you can do,” said West Lynn American’s Joe Rose, “when you lose your No. 1 pitcher like that.”We just have to learn from it the best we can. That’s all,” he said. The Nats got on it right away in the second, picking up two runs. The first scored when Luke Surette singled, stole second, and came around on Joe O’Brien’s base hit. Nolan Dube scored the other one on a walk, O’Brien’s single, and a wild pitch. The third inning, however, proved to be an event for Saugus ? and a nightmare for West Lynn American.Leadoff hitter Justin Winn was hit by a pitch, and went to third on Vozzella’s base hit. Dan Cacciola popped up, but Surette walked and, in the process, Winn and Vozzella both scored on wild pitches to make it 4-0.After Surette’s walk, Joe Bertrand singled and pinch-hitter Chris Sanderson drew a walk to load the bases. Nico DiFlorio went down swinging, and Morrill was one out from getting out of the inning cheaply when a fluke play broke the game wide open.O’Brien dribbled one up the middle and the Americans looked to be there to make the play in plenty of time. But the ball took a crazy bounce off second base and into no-man’s land in the outfield, allowing two more runs to score, making the score 6-0.The wheels fell off the wagon after that. An error led to Saugus American’s seventh run, and Winn, batting for the second time in the inning, unloaded on the first pitch he saw, tomahawking it over the centerfield fence for a three-run homer and a 10-0 lead.”When I saw that (the ball bounce on second), I knew this just wasn’t our day,” said Rose. “He was there. He was right there to make the play, and it bounced right over him. It’s one of those things. It happens. Nothing you can say about it other than that.”Vozzella was dominant in his four innings of work. He only allowed two walks and didn’t give up a hit.”He threw a lot of strikes,” said Furey, “and they were just swinging and missing the ball. We also had some pretty good defensive plays out there, too.”
