The Daily ItemSAUGUS ?The Saugus Babe Ruth 14-year-old all-star team had been chomping at the bit to play, but thanks to the rain, and the July 4 weekend, the team had to wait until Wednesday night – a week after the District 1 tournament began – to take the field at World Series Park. However, the wait was worth it. Led by the lights-out pitching of Riley MacEchern (no hits, 11 strikeouts in a five-inning game), Saugus defeated Danvers, 12-0, in a game shortened by the 10-run rule.If there were any thoughts of Saugus being a little rusty for having not seen any live action in two weeks, they were quickly dispelled right out of the gate with three runs in the top of the first inning. The assault continued, as Saugus scored in every inning.A.J. Guthro led off by reaching on an error. Two outs later, Danny Trench hit a tremendous home run to straightaway center – the ball disappearing in the trees well over the fence – for a 2-0 lead.”I thought we might have some butterflies, but we came out hitting right away,” said manager Anthony Guthro. “This team was ready to play tonight.”After Trench’s homer, Saugus got another run when MacEchern walked, stole second, took third on Nick Enos’ infield roller that he beat out for a hit, and scored on a single by Nick Sweeney. In the bottom of the first, MacEchern got to work right away, sandwiching three strikeouts around a walk. He continued his unhittable pitching in the second, striking out three more Danvers hitters.”We’ve all been waiting to see what he could do,” said Guthro, “and tonight we found out. He brought it all tonight.”Guthro managed to create Saugus’ fourth run all by himself, walking, stealing two bases, and coming home on a wild pitch. Saugus increased the lead to 5-0 in the third inning when MacEchern singled, stole second and went to third on a throwing error, and came home on batterymate Enos’ single.MacEchern fanned his seventh straight batter in the bottom of the third before Danvers finally got its bats on the ball – but all it had to show for that was two groundouts. The wheels fell off the Danvers wagon in the fourth, as Saugus scored five times to take a 10-0 lead, sending 10 batters to the plate. Leadoff hitter Anthony Finnacharo was hit by a pitch, and Guthro walked ? both runners moving up on a wild pitch.Dom DePesa’s singled knocked in one run, and Guthro scored the other on Trench’s field’s choice grounder, which came after Nick Antonucci was plunked. That made it 7-0.Three more runs came across in the inning to make it 10-0, and Saugus added its final two in the fifth, one of them on MacEchern’s home run and the other on an error.Saugus advances and plays Sunday at 1 p.m. The Lynn 14s are in action tonight in the tournament. The team won the 13-year-old tournament last year, and also captured the state title as well.Guthro had nothing but praise for Bob Davis and the rest of the World Series Park crew for getting the field in top shape after yesterday’s torrential rain.”I can’t say enough about the staff here,” said Guthro. “They were out all day fixing the field, and it was in great shape.”
