Lynn 16U softball manager Larry Coppinger has the same problem that Red Sox skipper Terry Francona has lately: their offenses have been served a healthy dose of Kryptonite in their food.Coppinger, whose team gets set to compete in the 16U New England regionals today (12:30) against Gorham, Maine, at the Grace Rogato Field at Breed Middle School, thinks he knows why, too.”All season long, we play with the mound at 43 feet, the way the high schools do it, but in Babe Ruth tournaments, they play at 40,” he said. “I think it messed with our timing a little.”Coppinger hopes that two weeks of steady practice will solve that problem. He’ll find out today.Because it is hosting the tournament, Lynn got an automatic berth. But the Lynners competed in the states two weeks ago anyway, and finished as the runners-up to Revere, which will also compete.”We had one good day,” said Coppinger, talking about his team’s wins over Lawrence and Revere the first day of the tournament, “and one not-so-good day,” when Revere swept two games to win the crown. The eight-team tournament is divided into two pools. Lynn will proceed to play games Saturday (8 a.m.) against New Hampshire North; and again at 1 p.m. against Mass. West.Coppinger’s daughter, Mackenzie, is clearly the No. 1 pitcher on this staff, having thrown for all four games in the states. If she runs into trouble, either Kerri Donovan or Taylor Newhall can pick up the slack, he says.Around the horn, it’s Donovan at first, Fallon Gaudet at second, Hannah Byrne at short and either Kim Caron or Natalie Glover at third.Katie Collins and Chelsey Bartlett split duties behind the plate (with Collins often serving as the extra hitter). The outfielders are Caroline Gouthro, Samantha McGuire, Taylor Hamelers, Gabby Trahant, Shawna Drown and Newhall.”Our strengths are pitching and defense, absolutely,” said Coppinger. “We have a lot of team speed. On paper, we have good hitting, but we haven’t seen it yet.”Of the states, Coppinger said that “we were together only about a week for that tournament ? With a little more practice, maybe it’ll get better. Both of those Revere pitchers were very good.”Sunday’s finale will feature a double-elimination tournament between the top two finishers in each pool.
