LYNN – When reality set in that Peabody West was going to compete in the Little League World Series, parents and supporters got busy. They had a fund-raising letter put together by Sunday afternoon and had sent emails to various businesses seeking donations. One such letter – sent by Joanne (Dooley) DeFillipo, whose son, A.J., is one of the players – reached the executives at Eastern Bank. And as a result, the Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation Tuesday donated $10,000 to cover the travel expenses for the players’ family members to travel to Williamsport.”This is a tremendous relief,” said league president Dave Cravotta, one of several parents on hand Tuesday morning to receive the donation. “This donation puts the financial distraction behind them so they and their sons can focus on bringing a championship to Peabody.””Great teamwork happens both on and off the field,” said Richard E. Holbrook, chairman and CEO of Eastern Bank. “Peabody West has shown what great teamwork is all about, while we here at Eastern pride ourselves in demonstrating the value of teamwork in our communities.”Peabody earned the right to go to the Little League World Series by winning the District 15 championship last month and prevailed in the sectional tournament as well at Lynn’s Reinfuss Field, home of the Wyoma Little League. It went on to capture the state championship earlier this month at Beverly’s Harry Ball Field, and won the New England regional title this past Saturday in Bristol, Conn., capped off by a dramatic game-ending grand slam by Matt Hosman.”We really appreciate this generous donation,” said Cravotta, whose son, Anthony, is also a member of the team. “We’ve already been in Bristol for 10 days, and there are things like meals and lodging to consider, not to mention things that have to be done back home.It runs into a lot of money, and this donation helps tremendously.”Joseph Riley, the bank’s executive vice president and a Peabody resident, presented the donation to Cravotta.”We are a mutual organization,” he said, “and that means we exist for the benefit of the customers we serve. And this is a fabulous cause.”Riley has first-hand experience with Little League, having coached both in the Peabody National and Saugus American organizations, long prior to that league’s trip to the World Series in 2003.”Peabody West,” he said, “is one of the most well-organized of all the leagues around,” Riley said.Among the delegation of Peabody West supporters on hand to receive the donation was league treasurer Frank Benea, whose 2006 team fell two wins short of achieving the same dream.”I enjoy coaching and teaching kids,” said Benea, who had players Matt Gonick, Hosman and Traverse Briana on his regular-season team.”Parents on hand to receive the donation included Cravotta, Ellen Gonick, Pat Correale, Dorothy Wlasuk, and YenYen Petrosino. Also on hand were relatives Bob Sullivan and his children Bobby and Danielle, and Barbara Marchese, whose husband, Dave, is one of the coaches. The parents will leave as a group Thursday morning, before dawn, in a caravan of cars.
