After 44 years, Saugus baseball coach Pat Petrone is stepping down – but not voluntarily.Athletic director Mike Nelson announced Thursday that the school has hired former North Andover coach Mike Angelo to take over the program.”I guess they just didn’t want me to coach anymore,” said Petrone, who shepherded Saugus baseball players through more than four decades. “I got a letter earlier this summer saying that they were going to post the job ? and that they wanted to go in a different direction. That’s all they said.”Petrone would not comment any further than that, except to say, “I don’t agree ? but what can you do.”I can tell you that I am deeply, deeply hurt,” he said. “When I talked to him, and (Nelson) told me, I just got up and walked out of the office.”I loved (the job),” Petrone said. “I worked hard at it. I lived it.”Angelo, a Holy Cross graduate, helped turn North Andover into an elite program, both in Division 2 and in the Cape Ann League. Over the past three seasons, his record was 47-17, and this year’s team won the Division 2 North title.A pitcher at Holy Cross, Angelo developed a staff that led the Cape Ann League in every major statistical category.Angelo also owns “Spotlight on Athletics,” a company that specializes in helping student-athletes gain acceptance and scholarships to college through athletics.Through his company Angelo helps to network with college coaches to promote his players. While coaching at North Andover High, Angelo also was the head of player development for the youth baseball programs in the town. In addition to helping at various games and practices, Angelo conducted clinics for players and coaches to ensure all programs were in alignment with the high school program.”Saugus has always had a strong tradition in baseball and we believe the tradition will continue to grow with Coach Angelo,” Nelson said.
