One team is sitting on a 3-0 record that nobody expected it’d have; the other is coming off an excruciating loss. But they have one thing in common: Both coaches know they’re in for a big test Friday (7) when Danvers travels to English.Danvers coach John Sullivan has seen everything go right for his 3-0 Falcons. The defense has stood tall on several occasions, and his offense has rolled past three opponents thus far – including Northeastern Conference/Large Revere last week.English started out with two wins, but lost in the last seconds Saturday to Beverly after clawing its way back to take a lead with just over a minute to go.”But,” says Bulldogs coach Peter Holey, “there’s been no hangover at practice. With 15 seconds to go, they really believed that were going to win that game.”They were hurting pretty good Sunday, but once they got back to school on Monday, and saw film, and saw how well they played in spots, we’ve had some great practices.”Sullivan doesn’t expect English to be anything other than what it always is – tough.”We’ve never had much luck with the Lynn teams,” he said. “English always has excellent football players with speed and skill ? and big kids up front. We’re looking at this as an opportunity for us to see how good we are.”Of course, Holey remembers things a bit differently.”I remember back when Chris Carroll (now at Bentley) was here,” he said. “I was a spectator in the stands, and Danvers came and in and beat English, and it knocked them out of a chance to win the conference.”(This year), Danvers deserves to be where it is (at 3-0),” Holey said. “They run an offense that’s problematic to us sometimes ? the Wing T. We’re going to have to be ready for them. They have athletic running backs who can cause a lot of problems for us.”One thing Holey and the Bulldogs may have going for them Friday is the return of bruising running back Jermaine Patterson, who missed the Beverly game.”We missed him on both offense and defense,” Holey said.Sullivan hopes his defense can come up big again. Thus far, it has.”We’ve been in positions where we’ve had to rise to the occasion on defense,” he said. “Someone’s broken a big play, but we’ve been able to stop them and come up with a Red Zone stance.”That’s something that has obviously made us pretty happy,” he said. “Our defense has responded to adversity.”In assessing English, Sullivan cites quarterback Tyllor MacDonald as the team’s catalyst.”I think he’s exciting,” Sullivan said. “He’s a kid who has to be reckoned with. He’s a touchdown waiting to happen ? running and passing.”And he has a good group of receivers,” Sullivan said. “I’m also impressed with how quick they are on defense. They have a lot of athletes on their line.”The Falcons bring a three-headed running game to Manning Field, led by Eric Burgos, John McGinnis (at fullback) and Clinton Lutz, “who had a breakout game last week against Revere,” Sullivan said.”They have athletic backs,” agreed Holey. “And they’re well coached on the line. They have a good quarterback. They have all the elements to make a good Wing T team.”And, of course, they’re well coached.”
