Former Lynn Tech star Antonio Anderson will be headed out to Texas Thursday to play for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the NBA Development League in McAllen, Texas.Anderson played his college basketball at the University of Memphis, and he was on the team that lost to Kansas in the 2008 national final (the regional championship the Tigers won was vacated this past summer by the NCAA because Memphis had an ineligible player – believed to Derrick Rose – on the team).Upon getting out of Memphis, Anderson got a tryout with the Charlotte Bobcats, but was cut before the beginning of the season. He says playing in the NBA D-League will give him further opportunities to hook on with an NBA club.”The team I’m playing for is owned by the Houston Rockets,” Anderson said, speaking via telephone from the Memphis Airport. “So it’s a good opportunity to be seen. I get to play in front of the Rockets organization every day. You can’t beat it.”Every time I play a game, I’m playing in front of the Houston Rockets ? and whatever team the opponent is affiliated with. So I’ll always be seen.”Even better, says Anderson, he gets a salary – and a pretty good one, too.”You get offered three levels of contracts, the minimum, the medium and the high,” he said. “And they offered me the high. It’s a pretty good deal.”Anderson will be playing mainly as a swingman (combination guard and small forward) – a position he generally played at Memphis.Anderson did not seem fazed by the NCAA’s actions regarding Memphis’ appearance in the NCAA final last year.”I don’t have much of a reaction to it,” he said, “except that we all know we played those games, and what we did as a team. We don’t allow any of that to bother us.”They can’t take it away from us,” he said. “We know we played those games.”
