SWAMPSCOTT – The second floor of the Swampscott Middle School was plagued with leaks from the roof and at least one ceiling tile crumbled and fell Monday as the region has been hit with four days of heavy rain and wind. One parent, who asked not to be identified, said conditions at the school were unsafe and students should have been dismissed.”Ceilings are falling down and the second floor has buckets catching water,” she said. “The kids are still in school.”School Business Manager Ed Cronin confirmed there were leaks in the school but interim Superintendent Maureen Bingham refused to allow a photographer or reporter into the school to observe the problem.”There are leaks and we do have containers catching the water,” Cronin said. “A ceiling tile did fall because it was saturated with water but it fell into the container that was there to catch leaks. No one was hurt, injured or even got wet.”Cronin said the leaky roof stems from major wind damage to the roof from a Feb. 26 Nor’easter. During the storm, the wind tore off half of the roof membrane.”We made temporary repairs to the roof,” Cronin said. “But on Sunday the wind took the membrane off again and we had a company back up there securing it. The membrane knocked down the skylights on the second floor and we put a tarp over it and the membrane was re-secured.”Cronin said the latest fix was only meant to be temporary and the school department is working with the insurance company and a contract to have the portion of the roof that was affected replaced.”The good news is that because it is covered by insurance, we do not have to go through the whole process of putting it out to bid,” Cronin said. “We’re trying to get the roof replaced within the month.”
