SALEM – A Boston man charged with the fatal stabbing of a Lynn father during a confrontation in Salem’s Point neighborhood last April remains held without bail following his arraignment Tuesday in Salem Superior Court.Jonathan M. Rivera, 21, who has lived in various locations on the North Shore, Boston and Quincy, wearing a blue two-piece prison suit, said in a robust voice he was “not guilty” to a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the April 7 stabbing death of Shaundell Turner.As jointly recommended by the prosecutor and defense, Judge John T. Lu ordered Rivera held at the Middleton Jail without bail but left the door open for a bail review at another court hearing.Turner, 30, of 382 Essex St., Lynn, was stabbed once in the chest around noon near 50 Palmer St. in Salem after an argument between the two men.Turner’s female companion called 911 at 12:07 p.m. and told Salem police she was on her way to the police station with Turner in her car. Turner, the father of a 10-year-old boy, was then transported to Salem Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:31 p.m.Rivera fled the scene and was tracked down the following day at a Ramada Inn on Morrissey Boulevard in Dorchester, where he was arrested without incident.He was located through the joint efforts of Salem and Lynn police, the U.S. Marshal’s Service and the Boston and state police fugitive units.Beverly Turner, the mother of Shaundell, reported earlier that her son had argued with Rivera in the past, but she assumed the feud was over.Rivera was indicted by an Essex County grand jury on July 2.A conviction on the charge carries a life sentence behind bars with no chance of parole.Rivera is due back in court on Oct. 12 for a pretrial conference.Assistant District Attorney Kristen R. Buxton is prosecuting the case and Edward L. Hayden of Lynn is the defense attorney assigned to defend Rivera.Rivera’s criminal record dates back to when he was a young teenager, according to court records.At the time of the fatal stabbing incident, Rivera was out on bail awaiting trial on several matters, including a witness intimidation case involving his girlfriend.
