SALEM – Bail for a furniture mover facing five years in state prison after being caught peddling suboxone in Peabody last month remains at $2,500 following his arraignment in Salem Superior Court.Ray J. Quiles, 25, of 56 Lowell St., #1, Lynn, appeared Thursday pleading innocent to a charge of distribution of suboxone, a subsequent offense, before Judge John T. Lu.The judge agreed to set the same bail amount as was previously set in Peabody District Court, at the joint recommendation of the prosecutor and defense, with the condition that a bail review hearing could be heard at another court date.In the meantime, Quiles will have to come up with $2,500 cash in order to get out of the Middleton Jail pending trial. The charge arises out of an incident on the night of July 12 when Peabody police say they observed Quiles sell suboxone to an individual at the corner of Lowell and Bourbon streets.Suboxone is similar to heroin, but has a less euphoric high and is easier to stop ingesting.Due to a prior conviction, Quiles faces a mandatory punishment of five years in state prison with no chance of early release, if convicted as charged. The case was continued to Oct. 1 for a pretrial conference hearing.Assistant District Attorney Greg A. Friedholm is prosecuting the case for the state and public defender Alice Jayne is the defense attorney.Quiles has been deemed indigent, meaning he has no funds to hire his own attorney and the state will pay all costs, but he is responsible for $150 towards that legal representation.
