SAUGUS – The Belmonte Middle School Building Committee voted Wednesday to add two articles to the Town Meeting warrant seeking money for additional repairs to the school not included in the $18.9 million repair project. The first article requests $862,000 to replace old vinyl asbestos tiles and install a new floor throughout the school while the second article requests an additional $555,000 for project “alternates” including replacing the gym bleachers ($50,000), replacing student lockers ($160,000), additional upgrades to data systems ($200,000) and replacement of the gym floor, and refinishing the stage floor ($130,000).School Committee member Arthur Grabowski was the lone committee member to vote against the articles, saying he was “disappointed” with the current situation and had “serious reservation” about going to Town Meeting for more money.Grabowski said the new facade, which costs $1.4 million, should be taken out of the project and replaced with asbestos abatement and other alternates.?In my opinion, the facade is visual ?” said Grabowski. “Everything on those seven alternates are something the kids and the community are going to use seven to eight hours a day ? The facade is so immaterial at this time. I?m going to walk by and say, ?Oh, nice facade,? but I can?t use the gym.”School Committee Chairman Wendy Reed said she agreed with Grabowski, but noted that items like new bleachers and new lockers are considered aesthetic by the MSBA and would not be reimbursed.Jim Dowd, Project Manager for Skanska Builders, said there can be no alterations to the project and the alternates must remain as is since the Massachusetts School Building Authority has already approved the project and signed the contract.?Even though we tried to make some adjustments, (the MSBA) told us that that scope is set in stone and we have to proceed that way,” said Dowd.Town Meeting member Peter Manoogian was in attendance and said he couldn?t understand this “rationale behind that regulation” and urged the committee to go to the MSBA for clarification.?I would feel a whole lot better if representatives of this committee, and perhaps the Town Manager, sat down with the people at MSBA and asked the question,” said Manoogian. “I can?t get my mind around this concept that, once you?re locked in, if a community decides it wants to remove asbestos instead of doing the facade, there?s no way to do that.”Dowd said he was already in talks with the MSBA to set up a conference call with project managers and town officials for next week. The Belmonte Building Committee will meet again on Tuesday, April 17 at 4 p.m.Matt Tempesta can be reached at [email protected].
