Saugus, Lynnfield and Fenwick impress

LYNN – Several area girls basketball teams had impressive 2012 debuts Saturday in the Paul Duchane girls hoop jamboree at Classical.Saugus, Lynnfield, and Bishop Fenwick came out ahead in their games. The Sachems, 22-9 winners over Malden, established an early lead by cleaning the glass on the offensive end. They held a 16-4 lead at halftime.Despite being held scoreless for about nine minutes by Malden’s pressure defense in the backcourt, Saugus was able keep the Golden Tornadoes from getting back in the game.Junior Norma Waggett collected eight points and seven rebounds for the Sachems. Senior Andrea Davis added six boards.North Reading 9, Winthrop 7The Vikings nearly came back to win. They took a 7-5 lead late in the second half. North Reading was able to even the game on a layup and then converted two free throws with 33 seconds left. The Vikings’ final desperation heave hit the rim before the ball bounced out.The largest lead by any team in this game was four as both teams’ zone defenses held each other scoreless before North Reading hit a couple of baskets late in the first half.Kristen Siscamanis led the Lady Vikings with four points.Lynnfield 21, Marblehead 11Catherine Lawless had seven points to help the Pioneers gain an early lead. Lynnfield opened with a 5-0 run and they held an 8-3 advantage at halftime. Tory DeCesare extended the lead to 10 points at 13-3 with a three-pointer early in the second half.Emily Kulevich tallied six points as she hit two shots from beyond the arc for the Magicians. Overall, Marblehead hit three treys.Fenwick 23, Swampscott 6Fenwick used efficient passing and took advantage of the Big Blue mistakes. The Lady Crusaders controlled this game from the start as they jumped out to a 14-4 lead at the break.Kate Lipka led the team with five points for the Crusaders. Gianna Pizzano, Sam Borelli, and Kelsey Wilkinson each had four points.Swampscott had chances to get back in the game, but they failed to convert on the fast break. Fenwick’s guards would get back and rush Swampscott’s shots.Wilmington 19, Danvers 16In a back and forth contest, the Wildcats went on a 5-1 run in the final few minutes. Danvers had an opportunity to tie the game in the final seconds, but they were unable to get a shot off with Wilimington’s aggressive ball pressure.Wilmington came out shooting the ball well, but Danvers held them in check while they went on a 7-0 run to close the half with a 7-5 lead. Both squads traded baskets throughout the second half before Wilmington maintained their late advantage.Kara Connors finished with six points for the Lady Falcons. Devin Walsh had six rebounds.Alex Derian notched eight points for Wilmington. Rachael Mara had four points.Masconomet 26, Peabody 10The Tanners were behind 15-0 before they scored their first basket. From there, they matched up better against the Chieftains.Alexandra Lomasney led the way for Peabody with four points. Nicole Femino had 10 points to lead Masco.Medford 22, Beverly 19The Panthers spotted the Mustangs an early 7-2 lead before coming back to make a good game of it.Bridget Keaton has six points for Beverly and Andrea Zelano five. The Mustangs are coached by Saugus’ Leo Burke.
