Despite holding the game to a 0-0 deadlock after three quarters, the No. 8 St. Mary’s boys soccer team couldn’t quite hold on long enough in a 4-0 loss to No. 1 Bishop Feehan in the CCL Cup quarterfinals at McGrath Stadium in Attleboro Monday. After a mistake in the back end led to the first goal in the fourth quarter, Spartans coach Mike D’Agostino decided to play aggressive and take a few chances to try and pull out the win.
“Once we fell behind late in the game, I decided to take a few chances and they ended up costing us a couple more goals,” said D’Agostino. “We hung with them the whole way and we had plenty of chances of our own. I thought we did a tremendous job defensively, but it just wasn’t enough to get the win.”
Freshman goalkeeper Jacob Guarino shined in the loss, making a number of clutch saves throughout the game.
“He was a rock in net just like he has been all season for us,” D’Agostino said of Guarino. “As he continues to play he’s only going to get more mature and more solid, so we’re excited for what the future holds with him.”
Senior captains Jackson Nickolau and Eduardo Toranzo also played well, as did seniors Kevin Espino and Zach Barden and junior Ryan Fraher.
The Spartans finish the season at 6-10-1.
“We had a solid season and we adapted to this new way of playing soccer as the season went on,” said D’Agostino. “We have a really young team, and as we got closer to the end of the season we really saw the maturity start to grow. We’re just going to try to build off of that this offseason and come into next year even better.”
