St. John’s Prep football falls to Central Catholic in Division 1 semifinal

LOWELL — The St. John's Prep football team couldn't muster up the same magic that it did earlier this season against Central Catholic, as the No. 3 Eagles fell to the No. 2 Raiders by a score of 35-12 at Cawley Stadium Friday night.

Quarterbacks Jack Perry and Victor Harrington each threw one touchdown pass in the loss, while receiver Jesse Ofurie caught both of them. Running back Carsone Browne rushed for more than 100 yards in the loss, while Jackson Delaney had more than 100 receiving yards.

The game was an even battle for the first several minutes, but Prep drew first blood when it got a nine-yard touchdown connection from Perry to Ofurie with 3:03 to go in the first.

But it was all Central from there. Largely behind the play of quarterback Ayden Pereira, who threw for a touchdown and rushed for another in the first half, the Raiders scored 21 unanswered points to go up 21-6 at the half.

That trend continued in the second half, as Central Catholic opened things up with a 77-yard touchdown drive to go up 28-6. After Pereira added another rushing touchdown in the fourth to make it 35-6, the Eagles rounded out the scoring when Harrington came in and hit Ofurie on a 42-yard touchdown in the final six minutes of play.

St. John's Prep (8-3) will return to the field for a Thanksgiving Day matchup against Xaverian.
