LTTE: MaryEllen Fletcher has earned my lifelong support

To the editor:

Having known MaryEllen Fletcher for almost twenty five years, I can, with confidence, recommend that she be elected to the Swampscott Select Board. My late husband, Donny, and I both served on the Clarke PTA, where we got to know MaryEllen. She was raising her niece, who attended Clarke School, and got involved with the school and the PTA. I’ll never forget when she donated a bike to the holiday fair. She also personally funded a year of tutors so students could get after-school homework help. Donny and I both admired MaryEllen’s hard work and dedication to Clarke School.

Fast forward twenty years and MaryEllen continues to be kind and generous. You will often see her supporting our students by attending sporting and other community events. Last year, MaryEllen organized a “fan bus” to go to a field hockey game on the South Shore to support the team when they were attacked on the national news. She brought the town together to support our athletes.

One of MaryEllen’s greatest qualities is that she is a problem solver. When there was a budget issue between the schools and the town administrator, MaryEllen stepped in and helped to find a solution. As a result, the schools are now again applying for Medicare reimbursement which ranges from $70,000 – $90,000 a year. MaryEllen made sure the reimbursement would go back to the schools. Also, one of the most fiscally responsible accomplishment in recent years was a savings of $18 million when she pushed to bond the new elementary school six months before the former town administrator wanted to. She is now working to get much-needed repairs done at the middle school.

For the reasons stated above, and for so many more reasons, I wholeheartedly support MaryEllen and I know Donny would too. Please vote for MaryEllen so she can continue to work hard for the residents of Swampscott.

Sincerely,

Heidi Currie Legere

Swampscott
