LYNN — Sparks and smoke showing from a Union Street manhole cover prompted a response from Lynn Police and firefighters on Wednesday afternoon.
Lynn Police Lt. Michael Kmiec said the Lynn Fire Department called for police assistance with the sparks and smoke.
Lynn District Fire Chief Stephen Archer, the city’s next fire chief, said the department sent Engine 5 and Ladder 1 to respond to the manhole in the vicinity of 126 Union St. at approximately 2:45 p.m.
Archer said fire companies were sent to stand by and await the arrival of the power company to shut down the feed to the manhole and take care of the problem.
“We don’t extinguish fires in manholes,” Archer said. “We stand by and secure the area.”
