SAUGUS — State Police are investigating after a box truck rolled over and caught fire on Route 1 Saturday morning, leaving two people with serious injuries.
State Police responded to the crash at approximately 5:18 a.m. and found the 2016 Toyota HINO box truck — owned by Chubby Fish, Inc. of Portland, Maine — in the CVS parking lot on Main Street.
The truck caught fire after the crash, but the Saugus Fire Department was able to extricate the driver, a 36-year-old Waltham woman, and passenger, a 33-year-old Haverhill man, from the vehicle. Both occupants were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with what State Police classified as serious injuries.
The crash caused a large amount of oil to spill from the truck into the CVS parking lot, which is located on the southbound side of Route 1. Firefighters were able to mitigate the damage from the spill, but environmental protection officials responded to the scene to determine any possible hazards, police said.
Only one lane was closed to traffic during the rescue response and operation since most of the crash was located in the CVS parking lot. State Police cleared the scene at approximately 6:10 a.m., police said.
