LYNN — The Shawsheen baseball team lit up Fraser Field for 15 runs on 18 hits Friday afternoon and walloped Lynn Tech, 15-0.
Double-digits halted the game after five innings with Shawsheen way ahead. Games are called in the Commonwealth Conference if one team is ahead by 15 runs after five full innings.
Three Ram hurlers whiffed 11 Tigers, allowing the Tigers, 0-9, only a hustle double in the third by senior shortstop Enderson Mejia.
Dan McCrevan started for the Rams, striking out six batters in two innings. McCrevan was replaced by Liam Dawson who struck out four, allowing the double by Mejia, the only runner Tech put on base all afternoon. Sean Flagg pitched a 1-2-3 fifth, striking out Leandro Dane and getting Nick Petralia and catcher Stanley Watring out on grounders.
Ram coach Brian McCarthy said it was great to get a number of hard-hit balls, and solid pitching by all three hurlers he put on the hill. Every batter in the Shawsheen (7-3) lineup had at least one base hit Friday afternoon.
“Our three guys, McCrevan, Dawson and Flagg all did a great job for us today. We hadn’t planned on using more than one guy, but we got a big lead early, and worked those three guys in and they all did great for us,” McCarthy said. “Getting the early lead, I think gave them all some confidence out there, it’s a lot easier to throw when you’re confident on the mound.”
Shawsheen dropped three runs on Tech in the top of the first and another three in the top of the second. Tech’s Jhaon Ortega, in his first varsity start, did a nice job in the third, including starting a crisp 1-4-3 double play, but the Rams put six unearned runs on the board in the top of the fourth to lock it up.
“The kids really came alive hitting the ball today,” McCarthy said. “We were in a little offensive drought earlier in the season, but we were cooking yesterday against Greater Lawrence, and we were cooking again today.”
Tiger’s assistant coach Chris Dellascio, filling in for head coach Mike Kenney, said that there’s not much you can do when the other team is hitting the ball on the nose into the gaps.
“It’s not like we made errors, they just pounded the ball, and they hit it into the holes, not much you can do about that,” Dellascio said. “I’m proud of the guys, how they battled against a very good team, Jhoan, in his first varsity start, did what we asked him to do. He threw strikes, they’re just a very good hitting team.”
Dellascio said he’s confident Tech will win this season, and win one soon.
“We had a tough one last week, we were leading Minuteman last week before we got rained out, we’ve got two with them, and a couple with Chelsea, we’ll get that win pretty soon,” the coach added.
