BOSTON — St. John’s Prep’s Nikolas Reardon won the high jump (6-4) and the long jump (22-4.25) to help the Eagles finish fifth with 34 points in the Division 1 boys state meet, Saturday, at the Reggie Lewis Center.
Tristan Shelgren also won the mile (4:20.48), which also got a 4th-place finish from its 4×800 relay team (8:17.35).
In the girls meet, Peabody finished ninth with 16 points, including four fifth-place finishes: Amanda Andrew in the 300 meters (42:26), Sophie Anderle in the 1,000 meters (3:04.37), Jessica Ostrowski in the 2-mile (11:29.22), and in the 4×400 relay (4:07.08).
The Tanners also picked up ninth-place finishes from Emily Nelson in the 600 meters (1:42.06), and the 4×800 (10:09.64).
The Peabody boys finished 17th with 10 points. Joseph Farhat placed fifth in the 1,000 meters (2:33.19). Eric DeMayo was sixth in the shotput (48-10), while Patrick Pang was eighth (47-7½) in the same event. Dhimitri Bido was eighth in the long jump (20-2½), while Shane Braz was eighth in the 2-mile (9:50.45).
In the Division 2 meet Sunday, the Beverly girls finished in 11th place with 20 points, led by Gracie Sparkman, who placed third in the shotput (35-8¼). Lexi Sutyak was fifth in the 2-mile (12:04.95), while the 4×400 relay team also finished fifth. Abby Walsh was sixth in the mile (5:19.51), while Tyler Orlendella was sixth in the high jump (5’).
For Lynn Classical, Agnes Bangura finished eighth in the 55-yard dash.
In the boys Division 2 meet, Beverly placed 16th with 11 points. Sean Richardson was fourth in the 600 (1:25.48), one place ahead of teammate Johnny Jones (1:25.64). The Panthers finished seventh in the 4×400 (3:35.21), while Bobby Adams was 10th in the shotput (44-1).
Revere placed eighth in the 4×200 (1:36.87), while Classical’s Adam Washington was ninth (5-8) in the high jump. Also for Classical, Tyler Way missed out on a spot in the finals of the 55-meter dash by .04 seconds and placed 11th.
For Salem, Giovanni Guzman placed 10th in the high jump (19’ 6”).
WRESTLING
St. John’s Prep brought three wrestlers to the tournament, and all three made the finals.
In the 113-pound division, Ryan Garlitz pinned all four of his opponents. In final he wrestled Jake Ferri of Shawsheen, the defending State, all-state New England champion who hadn’t lost a match since his sophomore season.
It was 2-2 after regulation, and Garlitz did a move called the elevator and kicked Ferri over onto his back, pinning him at 6:58.
At 126, Malcolm Mitchell wrestled Mahari Miller of Springfield Central in the final, to whom he had lost twice during the season.
Miller got a Takedown with three seconds left in regulation to tie the match 8-8. In OT Mitchell scored on a single leg Takedown to win 10-8
At 132 Zach Alexander. lost a tight match against Cesar Alvan of Ludlow.
Garlitz and Alexander are Eagles coach Manny Costa’s 28th and 29th state champions.
Peabody freshman Phil Makoci placed eighth in the 195 pound weight class division at the Division 1 State Wrestling Championship meet this past weekend at Methuen High School.
Peabody placed 39th out of 44 teams with five points.
Makoci, the fourth seed in the North Division, was pinned by Phillip Rankin of Putnam, the top seed in the Central Division, in the opening round (1:10). He then defeated the No. 3 seed out of the South, Alex Lopes of Barnstable, with a pin (1:41) in the first round of the consolation, then defeated Franklin’s Kyler Colella, the fourth seed in the Central Division in a tight 4-3 decision.
Makoci lost his next match to Spencer Kozlack of Agawam, the number two seed in the West Division, in a second period pin in 3:28.
In the match for seventh place, Makoci came up on the short end of an 8-0 major decision to Cambridge Rindge and Latin’s Andre Domond, the third seed in the Central Division.
“As a freshman, he had an amazing season,” Tanners’ coach Dave Pinette said.
Jon Salmeron also competed in the meet. He was seeded fourth in the North Division at 160 pounds and ran into a buzzsaw in the first round, losing to the top seed in the Central Division, Ikaro Montiero (5:12). Salmeron was eliminated from the competition with a loss to Barnstable’s Vinny Ciliberto (3:23) in the first round of consolation.
In the Div. 2 meet at Algonquin, Lynnfield’s Connor Stead finished fifth in the 145-pound division.
In Division 3 at Wakefield High, Stephen Hopkins of Swampscott took third place. Wakefield High School on Hopkins went 4-1 over two days, with his only loss coming to eventual 138-pound champion, Brian Kelly from Foxborough in the semifinals.
