NSMC honors 11 local nurses

SALEM ? The North Shore Medical Center (NSMC) has honored 11 of its nurses for outstanding service as part of its celebration of National Nurses Week.The nurses recognized are residents of Lynn, Swampscott, Peabody, Revere, Marblehead and other North Shore communities.The Eleanor Broadhead Award for Advanced Practice Clinical Excellence was given to registered nurse and nurse practitioner Ellen Nash of Marblehead, assigned to Salem Hospital. The award was created by Eleanor Broadhead who endowed the Broadhead Program for Excellence in Nursing in 1995, in memory of her sister, Elizabeth, who volunteered as a nurse during World War II.The Broadhead Award for Clinical Excellence in Nursing was presented to four nurses from NSMC Salem Hospital, NSMC Union Hospital and Shaughnessy-Kaplan Rehabilitation Hospital. They were registered nurse Lisa Herlihy of Swampscott, assigned to NSMC Salem Hospital; registered nurse Carmen Jimenez of Medford, assigned to Shaughnessy Kaplan Rehabilitation Hospital; registered nurse Carol Nappi of Peabody, assigned to NSMC Union Hospital in Lynn; and registered nurse Bette Walker of Rowley, also at Salem Hospital.The NSMC Nursing Leadership Award recognizes nurse managers who exemplify the professional nurse and organizational values of medical center through their management and leadership skills, according to NSMC spokesman Casey Demoree.”These nurse managers excel in quality improvement, employee satisfaction, financial management and patient satisfaction,” she said.Leadership awards were presented to the following: registered nurse Lisa Cavallaro of Salem, assigned to Salem Hospital; registered nurse Beth Coombes of Salem, also at Salem Hospital; registered nurse Mary Ellen Murphy of Lynn, assigned to Union Hospital; and registered nurse Janel Wastaferro of Revere, assigned to Shaughnessy-Kaplan Rehabilitation Hospital.Nominated by their peers, the recipients of the fourth annual Donald W. Blodgett Exemplary Service Award demonstrate extraordinary service to their patients, families and nursing colleagues, Demoree said.Blodgett served as a NSMC trustee for 30 years. Recipient of the award in his name were: nursing technician Sarah Guzman of Salem; registered nurse Anthony Gazo of Beverly; and registered nurse Michael Scialdone of Salem, all assigned to Salem Hospital.
