REVERE – Members of Swampscott-based HealthLink, the North Shore’s most active environmental and public health advocacy group, last week brought its renewable energy awareness campaign onto Blue Line subways cars.Declaring “empower the planet,” the activists installed posters on two-thirds of the Blue Line cars and tried to interest riders in renewable energy initiatives. The posters will remain on display through Sept. 24.Daniel Adams and Marie Law, the poster artists, joined the group at Wonderland Station, as did Salem filmmaker Don McConnell, who filmed rider reaction to the innovative campaign strategy.”The subway-riding public already does its part to reduce dependence on fossil fuel used for transportation,” said HealthLink’s Jane Bright. “We felt they’d appreciate the message that renewable energy is here now and is viable and they’d help us spread the word.”HealthLink co-founder Lynn Nadeau of Marblehead said the group has worked for 10 years toward promoting a cleaner, safer environment and sustainable energy.”The public is on board with us now. People concerned about the air and other natural resources can translate their concern into the promotion of solar, wind, geothermal and ocean energy in Essex County municipalities,” she said.HealthLink member Gail McCormick of Lynn said the posters cleverly indicate the viability and cost effectiveness of renewable energy. “They also point out the problems with fossil fuels such as dependence on foreign oil, damage to human health, and increased global warming caused by CO2 emissions from coal power plants,” she said.
