DANVERS – College-bound high school students interested in learning about the admissions process to the nation’s service academies are urged to attend the Academy Night hosted by U.S. Rep. John F. Tierney on Thursday, Sept. 27, at North Shore Community College.Tierney, a Salem Democrat, said representatives from the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy will attend and speak with prospective students. Additionally, representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Maine Maritime Academy, Massachusetts Maritime Academy and Norwich University will be available for consultation with potential applicants.The special event will be held on the Danvers campus in the Health Professions Building, Room F119, from 7-9 p.m.Students who wish to attend the U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Military Academy or the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy must send a completed application packet to Tierney’s Peabody district office by Nov. 1.During November, Tierney’s Academy Review Board will evaluate each application, conduct interviews and make recommendations for names to be submitted for nomination to the respective academies in December.In order to be considered eligible, all applicants must be U.S. citizens, legal residents of the Sixth District of Massachusetts, unmarried with no children, and at least age 17 but no older than 23 as of July 1, 2007.For more information about applying to any of the service academies, contact Claudia Neidhardt in Tierney’s office at 978-531-1669.
