Girls Soccer Roundup: Classical lands in win column

The Classical High girls soccer team has struggled this season, but the Rams finally cracked the win column Thursday, defeating Gloucester, 2-0, at Gloucester.Senior Courtney Sullivan was immense in net for the Rams, making 19 saves and picking up her first shutout of the season. Freshman Christine Francois also wore the hero’s hat, scoring a goal and assisting on another.Francois scored Classical’s first goal on a free kick that found the top of the net in the first half. Jessie Carredano supplied an insurance goal when she scored off a Francois corner kick.”Every game she gets better and better,” Classical coach Marcy Durgin said about Francois, adding that Sullivan was getting to everything that came her way.”Anything that came inside the 18 was hers,” Durgin said.Classical is 1-8-2.Danvers 1, Salem 0At Danvers, Brittany Russo scored just before the end of the first half with Chrissy Barrows getting the assist.”We had a good game,” Salem coach Jessica Doyle said. “Our defense did an incredible job.”Danvers coach Jim Hinchion was happy to escape with the win.”They (Salem) had a great offsides trap,” he said. “They frustrated us all day. We were lucky to get out with a victory.”Kasey Kellard (13 saves) picked up the win for the Falcons (8-1). Kristin Wyke (7 saves) was between the pipes for Salem (5-5). Sweeper Jamie Hanson had a good game for the Witches.Marblehead 1, Beverly 0At Marblehead, Emma Crowley scored midway through the second half (Jenna Mizner assist) and the Magicians held on for the win and a 3-3-2 record. Silvie Cohen (5 saves) was in net.Winthrop 5, English 0At Winthrop, the Vikings (6-2-2) have been on a tear the last few games, outscoring their opposition 20-0 in the last three games. Vanessa Caruccio, Courtney Finn, Amber Miller, Alyssa Martel and Julie Dowson supplied the offense against the Bulldogs and Katarina Mallios picked up the shutout. English (1-7-3) had good games from Ashley Keighley, Alex Henry and Lauren Hinkle.Swampscott 5, Revere 1At Swampscott, the Big Blue (5-2-2) had the offense cranking. Janelle Mazzaferro, Janelle Ford, Marissa Gambale, Casey Connolly and Azra Dzino all scored with Mazzaferro and Gambale also getting assists. Swampscott led 1-0 at the half.
