School roundup: Lynnfield volleyball reaches state tourney

The Lynnfield High volleyball team qualified for the state tournament Wednesday with a 3-0 win over Masconomet at Lynnfield.Lindsey Buchanan and Andrea Marino both had monster games serving and in the final game, Jenna Guerriero came in and served an ace to finish off Masco. Lynnfield is 10-3 with the next goal a Cape Ann League title, according to coach Bob Cleary.FIELD HOCKEYSwampscott 0, Salem 0At Phillips Park in Swampscott, the Big Blue’s (2-5-4) Kelly Gillis stopped all 12 shots she faced in net.Lynnfield 4, Ipswich 1At Ipswich, sophomore left wing Angela Arakelian scored three goals and Meriam Gehret had the fourth for the Pioneers, who are in the midst of their best season in seven years. Melissa Williams had four saves. Mary Krieger and Molly Serino also played well for Lynnfield (11-3).Peabody 1, Saugus 1At Saugus, the Tanners lost to Saugus 3-0 the first time the teams met this season, but round two was a little better. Jamie Nocella scored early in the first half to give Peabody a 1-0 lead, but Haley Erickson salvaged the tie for the Sachems. There were a few anxious moments when Peabody’s Samantha Terenzoni got hit in the back of the head with the ball. She came up dizzy and had to leave the game to seek medical attention. Peabody is 6-3-4.GIRLS CROSS COUNTRYLynnfield 23, Amesbury 37At Amesbury, Julie Donovan finished second overall (22:15) and Renee Rober (22:21) took fifth for the Pioneers (4-6). Caroline Hand also ran well, placing fifth with a time of 22:39).BOYS CROSS COUNTRYLynnfield 20, Amesbury 39At Amesbury, the Pioneers (4-6) took the first three places led by winner Sam Oliveri (17:10), Dylan Rizzo, second (17:39), and Brian Sachetta (17:39). Nathanial Smith finished sixth (18:22).
