Cross Country Roundup: Walsh impresses on Swampscott girls team

Lindsay Walsh is only a sophomore, but she’s already making some noise as a member of the Swampscott High cross country team.Walsh finished first Monday in the Big Blue’s 18-39 win over Saugus at Breakheart Reservation and she had a successful weekend at the Bay State Invitational, where she took fourth out of 204 runners.”She’s really taken off,” Swampscott coach Dominic Finelli said. The team finished 10th.Against Winthrop, Kelly Walton took second (18:41); Amelia Antrim (18:43) took third and Rachel Manley, Saugus, took fourth with a time of 20:03.The Big Blue are 6-0 with a showdown with Marblehead (5-1) on tap Monday.Peabody 15, English 50At Peabody, Nina Barane was the top English runner, taking 12th place. The Bulldogs face Classical on Monday.Marblehead 20, Winthrop 39At Winthrop, Bridget Forbes and Katie Herlihy went 1-2 for the Magicians, running a 17:29 on the 2.6-mile course. Claire Depew finished fourth (17:47) and Kelsey Pedersen took sixth (18:27). The Magicians are 5-1.Revere 15, Classical 47At Lynn Woods, freshman MacKenzie O’Donnell finished with her team’s best time (29:09). She finished in seventh place.BOYS CROSS COUNTRYSwampscott 15, Saugus 50At Breakheart, the Big Blue’s Ilya Smelyansky topped the field with a time of 17:17. Teammate Sierk Vanderburg finished second (17:27); Dan Rakoc, third (17:28); and Kasey Collins, fourth (17:37). Andrew Atten was the Sachems’ top finisher, taking eighth with an 18:24.Sam Rakoc had a big day at the Bay State Invitational Saturday, finishing fourth out of 308 runners. The team finished seventh. Swampscott is 4-2.Peabody 17, English 46At Peabody, English’s James Bell took fourth with a 19:02. The Bulldogs are home Monday against Classical.Marblehead 18, Winthrop 45At Winthrop, Marblehead’s Gui Von Zuben took home first with a 15:20 on the 2.6-mile course. The Magicians (4-2) also had a trio of freshmen do well. Will Herlihy took second (15:27); Justine Levine, fourth (15:35); and Henry Pratt, fifth (16:46).Revere 16, Classical 46At Lynn Woods, Johnny Long ran his best time of the year (19:11) for the Rams. The effort was good enough for fourth place.
