October 17, 2007 by jerekson

Julie Dowson has been racking up the goals for the Winthrop High girls soccer team, but her knack for setting things up took center stage Tuesday in a 6-0 win over Gloucester.Dowson figured in all six goals, scoring two and assisting on the other four to bring her season totals to a Northeastern Conference-leading 17 goals and 19 assists.Haley Benson (2 goals), Stephanie Christopher and Alyssa Martel accounted for the other four.”She showed she’s not just a scorer,” Winthrop coach Tracey Martucci said. “She’s also involved with all the setting up. She runs the whole field, scoring and distributing the ball. She really is an all-around player.”Katarina Mallios (8 saves) was in net for the Vikings (8-3-2).Salem 2, English 1At Salem, the Witches (6-6-1, 6-5-1 NEC) led 2-0 at the half on goals by Jamie Hanson and Carly Henderson. English’s Megan Forti cut the lead to 2-1, but the Bulldogs couldn’t come up with the equalizer despite doing a good job handing the Witches offsides trap. The first time the two teams met, Salem won 5-1.English is 2-9-3.Minuteman 2, Tech 0At Lexington, the Tigers held Minuteman at bay until late in the first half when the Mustangs scored on a penalty shot. They scored again with two minutes left to put the game out of reach. Tech keeper Malee Slocum fielded nearly 20 shots. Tech is 0-10.Saugus 1, Marblehead 0At Saugus, Jessica Capozzi scored 10 minutes into the second half and the lead held up despite a few assaults on the net. Christina Vernaci brought the ball down the right side for the Sachems and crossed it to the far post where Capozzi knocked it home. Jill Howell picked up the shutout for Saugus (6-4-3, 6-3-3 Northeastern Conference).Peabody 6, Beverly 0At Peabody, the Tanners (12-1, 11-1 NEC) got two goals each from Erika DiGiacomo and Alyssa Manoogian and a goal and an assist from Caitlin Pinkham against the Panthers.Lauren Ward added a goal with Emily Manoogian having two assists and DiGiacomo one. Goalkeeper Amy Perkins made seven saves.Revere 1, Classical 0The Rams, 1-10-2, “didn’t play our game,” said coach Marci Durgin.Still, she wanted to credit sweeper Kelly Deveney and midfielder Nikki Kourembanas for playing well.Classical plays Thursday at Beverly.
