$200K bail for Saugus man accused of armed carjacking

For The ItemSALEM – Bail for a Saugus man accused of trying to carjack a vehicle in the parking lot of Circuit City this summer remains at $200,000 cash.In Salem Superior Court Wednesday morning, John L. Jumper 48, of 8A Granby St., entered his plea of not guilty to armed carjacking, armed assault with intent to rob, two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of assault and battery, malicious destruction of property over $250, violation of a court order, intimidation of a witness and being a habitual offender.As jointly recommended by the prosecutor and defense, Judge Howard J. Whitehead retained the high bail of $200,000 and continued the case to Nov. 7 for a possible bail review and pretrial conference. Jumper remains held in lieu of bail at the Middleton Jail.Charges for the June 23 incident at approximately 2:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Circuit City on the Lynn Fells Parkway, stemmed from when Jumper attemped to carjack a Honda Accord from a Saugus woman.The victim told authorities that Jumper approached her in the parking lot, pointed a weapon at her face and ordered her out of the car.The woman began screaming, which attracted the attention to shoppers who rushed to her aid.Jumper fled from the scene, but was located hours later following a tip to police.He also is accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend at the same time. That woman had obtained a restraining order against him.Jumper has numerous felony convictions in Middlesex County, according to Assistant District Attorney Jean M. Curran, who is prosecuting for the commonwealth.Rebecca Whitehill is the court-appointed attorney defending Jumper, who has been declared indigent with no funds to hire a lawyer.
