The St. Mary’s High golf team has enjoyed plenty of success within its league and at the state level, but until Monday it hadn’t had a player capture and individual title at either level. Thanks to Jon Baldwin and Kevin McCarthy, the Spartans’ to-do list just got a little shorter. The two tied for the Catholic Central League individual championship by both shooting a 74, but Baldwin was declared the winner on a match of cards. The effort also earned Baldwin CCL Most Valuable Player honors.Sixteen players competed in the tournament including several more from St. Mary’s. Tommy McPherson shot an 84 for eighth place and Ryan Fitzsimons and Shaun Velez both shot an 87, tying them for 10th.The Spartans will try and make some noise at the state level beginning Monday, when they compete in the Division 3 north sectional (state qualifer) at Far Corner in Boxford. Baldwin, McCarthy, McPherson, Fitzsimons and Velez will also compete, as will Jesse Powers.Last year, St. Mary’s reached the state finals, which it finished third.FIELD HOCKEYWaltham 1, Fenwick 0At Fenwick, the Crusaders (7-6-2) saw a tie slip away when Waltham scored with about 10 minutes left in the game.Junior varsity goalie Casey Landry got her first shot in net at the varsity level and played very well, turning away 13 shots, according to coach Marybeth Mahoney.VOLLEYBALLPeabody 3, Masco 0At Masco, Rachel Negri had 11 kills and four blocks, Janelle Rodriguez had six kills and five blocks and Kristyn Kellie was a rock on defense for the Tanners (12-4). Peabody won the games 25-18, 25-17, 25-23. The Tanners trail North Reading and Lynnfield in the Cape Ann League with four games remaining.FOOTBALLBillerica 20, St. John’s 10At Billerica, the Eagles (3-4) put three quick points on the board on a 38-yard field goal by Tom McTeague, but Billerica went on to ring up 20 points before St. John’s would score on a 12-yard run by Scott Darby (the kick was good) in the fourth quarter. Nate Brakeley and Mike Papagni played well in the loss.Gloucester 41, Revere 6At Gloucester, Andrew Fulford and Taylor Burbine each scored two touchdowns for the Fishermen.
