It was a lesson in law and how government works for over 40 seniors from Lynn English High School on Wednesday, as students participated in Meet Your Legislator Day at the State House in Boston.Street Law teacher Brian LaPierre and School Resource Officer Mark Smith organized the civics lesson. Rep. Steve Walsh (D-Lynn), along with state Sen. Tom McGee (D-Lynn), took time to meet the students and discuss issues affecting their school, community and the commonwealth as a whole.”The students were fantastic,” McGee said. “We had a lively discussion that centered around not only problems that big cities like Lynn are facing, but also solutions on how government may be able to assist to fix them.”The day was filled with a tour of the State House, seeing the Legislature in action, and even an impromptu gathering to meet Lt. Governor Tim Murray (D-Worcester).”I felt my students really enjoyed meeting the Lt. Governor,” LaPierre said. “For him to take time out of his busy schedule to meet us spoke volumes about the fact that he cares about Lynn and its most precious resource, its children. I want to publicly thank Rep. Walsh and his staff for putting together this exciting opportunity to learn about state politics and the role of our lawmakers.”
