Classical doubles John and Abigail Adams scholarships

LYNN – Lynn Classical High School honored 100 winners of the John and Abigail Adams Scholarships Wednesday, more than doubling the amount of award winners from last year.The scholarships are handed out to any student who finishes advanced in the math portion and proficient or advanced on the English portion of the MCAS test, and finishes in the top 25 percent in the district.Students will receive a tuition waiver to any state college, but must attend for four straight years beginning in the immediate fall semester after graduating high school.”I am very proud of what you students have done,” Principal Warren White said before handing out the individual awards to each student in the school’s cafeteria. “This is a remarkable number of students that have achieved this scholarship this year.”In Massachusetts, the average tuition per year is $734 at community colleges, $957 at state colleges and $1,618 at the University of Massachusetts.Recipients of the scholarship are still responsible for the cost of fees, books and other expenses. Fees vary from school to school, but average $2,927 each year at community colleges, $5,173 each year at state colleges and $7,687 each year at the University of Massachusetts.As the state’s largest merit-based tuition waiver program, the Adams Scholarship is meant to supplement the $93 million in state financial aid administered each year to Massachusetts residents. The scholarship was signed into law in 2004 as part of Gov.
