SAUGUS – Saugus police are patting an officer on the back for stopping a trio of youths who allegedly reaped havoc on town residents during a two-week vandalism spree. On Monday night, Patrolman Gary Sacco pulled over a green Jetta for speeding near Saugus Center after he realized it matched the description of a getaway car used during a vandalism incident a short time earlier on Cleveland Avenue.”It was put out over the air and that’s how he got them,” said police spokesperson Lt. Michael Annese.”He did a great job,” Annese said. “A lot of time we don’t catch the culprits when these sort of crimes occur late at night.”Police said Charles Ross, 17, of Danvers, Michael Broderick, 17, of Everett and a 15-year-old boy from Saugus likely smashed pumpkins through the windshields of 14 vehicles over the past two weeks.Annese said pumpkins were often the alleged vandals’ weapons of choice, but they used baseball bats as well in some instances. The vandalism was reported all across town – including Lamplighters Way, Intervale Avenue, Biscayne Avenue, Clifton Avenue and Susan Drive. One of the youths allegedly confessed to the crimes, police said. All three suspects were charged with malicious destruction of property. They will be summonsed to Lynn District Court for an upcoming hearing.
