LYNN – A High Rock Street man spent part of Thanksgiving morning in jail after he allegedly wouldn’t stop for police on Essex Street while driving drunk.Luciano Lopez, 35, of 72 High Rock St. #1, was arrested at about 3 a.m. Thursday and charged with operating under the influence of liquor, failing to stop for police, failing to signal and two marked lanes violations.Police said officers were flagged down on Union Street near the corner of Joyce Street where people said a driver was falling asleep at the wheel. The officers caught up to the driver, later identified as Lopez, and followed him from a distance as his car swerved over the double yellow line twice and made a turn without signaling, police said.Police finally initiated a stop on Essex Street after the car circled around from Union, but Lopez didn’t stop for a few moments until reaching the intersection of Joyce Street, police said.Lopez allegedly had glassy and bloodshot eyes and a strong odor of alcohol on his breath.Police said Lopez was so drunk he couldn’t stand up on his own two feet without assistance.Lopez refused to take a breathalyzer test, which means his license was automatically suspended for 180 days.He was bailed from the Lynn police station within a few hours of his arrest. On Friday, a Lynn District Court judge ordered Lopez back to court Jan. 10 for a pre-trial hearing.
