SALEM – Another of the seven inmates involved in an uprising at the Middleton Jail in June that resulted in five guards being injured confessed in Salem Superior Court Monday, receiving four to five years in prison.Alexis Marquez Maldonado, 29, of Haverhill, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, causing serious bodily injury and destruction of property before Judge David A. Lowy.The incident stems from an uprising at the Middleton Jail on June 7 when seven inmates who were taking showers, crawled out, grabbing their shackles and handcuffs and attacked two guards in the segregation unit.They smashed a computer, computer keyboard, surveillance monitors and took brooms from a storage closet and began swinging at the guards as the officers radioed for help.Other correctional officers responding to the backup call were struck before the inmates were subdued.Two of the guards received head wounds and another had wounds to his head that required stitches.Maldonado had been serving a jail sentence on another case, but the state prison sentence imposed effectively erases that jail term.Assistant District Attorney Michael A. Patten is the prosecutor and Mark Schmidt was the defense lawyer for Maldonado.Jurrell Laronal, 22, of Dorcester, pleaded guilty to his role last week and received up to four year in prison.Another participant, Eddy Lopez, also known as Miguel Torres, 30, of Lawrence, pleaded guilty to his role earlier this summer.Four others, Angel Andrades, 23, Juan Rivera, 24, formerly of Lynn, along with Miguel Diaz, 21, remain in custody awaiting trial on the case.
