The St. Mary’s girls basketball team got off on the right foot Friday night with a 46-36 win over Lynnfield in the Hamilton-Wenham Kickoff Tournament.Freshman Tori Faieta picked up where she left off last year, scoring 12 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. Senior Jenna Blydell also started off strong with 13 points and seven rebounds.”For our first game, it was a little sloppy,” St. Mary’s coach Jeff Newhall.Newhall was happy with play in the first, third and fourth quarters, but not in the econd.”They ball wasn’t going in the hole, he said.Lynnfield, led by Abby Tobin (7 points) went up by a point in the third quarter, but St. Mary’s reeled off 11 consecutive points to regain control.St. Mary’s will play Hamilton-Wenham in the championship game today at 12:45 p.m.Ham-Wen 55, Saugus 38In the Hamilton-Wenham Kickoff Tournament, the Sachems have a date with Lynnfield today in the consolation game (11 a.m.). The Sachems trailed 18-12 at the half . Sophomore Jacki Strangie had a successful varsity debut with 10 points, four steals and four assists. Sara Dean, at center/forward, did a nice job on the board with eigh trebounds. She also had four points. Lauren Garchinsky (8 points, 4 steals and 4 rebounds) also played well.Winthrop 64, Everett 29In the Massport Tournament in Winthrop, the Vikings are off and running with the usual cast of characters doing the bulk of the damage. Courtney Finn had 15 points, Nicole Giaquinto, 13 points; Kristen Finn, 12 points, and Katarina Mallios, nine points. Abigail Belcher also helped out with eight points. Winthrop, which is without Meredith Soper this season (she transferred to Arlington Catholic) led 41-6 at the half.
