Roundup: St. Mary’s icemen open with a win

There might have been a lot of new faces in the lineup for the St. Mary’s hockey team Saturday at Connery Rink for their season opener against North Reading, but the result was no different.Tommy Adams had a goal and an assist while Anthony Struppa had a pair of assists in his first game on defense as the Spartans blanked the Hornets, 3-0.”To beat a quality team like North Reading, we are very happy as coaches,” St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee said.The Spartans needed only 3:59 of the first period to take an early lead as Adams picked up his first goal for St. Mary’s, assisted by Struppa.It stayed 1-0 for the rest of the period before the Spartans pulled away early in the second. Sophomore Corey Bartlett converted off a feed from Corey Lee at the 21 second mark to increase the gap to 2-0. Just over three minutes later, John Baldwin was able to shovel home a Struppa rebound to make it 3-0 St. Mary’s.After that, the game belonged to the Spartan defense and junior goalie Dan Yetman, who turned aside all 19 shots to pick up the win.”The defensive core, especially Struppa, did a great job and Dan was incredible in net,” Lee said. “He really is our backbone.”Things don’t get any easier for St. Mary’s as they will host defending Catholic Central League/Large champion Austin Prep on Wednesday (6:30) at Connery.GIRLS HOCKEYMarblehead 2, Wilmington 0At Ristuccia Arena in Wilmington, the Magicians got their season off to a good start as Tori Snow and Meg McDonald had goals while Ashley White and Courtney Colantuno each had two assists.”The whole team came out flying and everybody played well,” Marblehead coach Emily Hudak said.Moe Bradley got the shutout win in goal, turning aside all 13 Wildcat shots.GIRLS BASKETBALLSt. Mary’s 62, Ham-Wen 51At Hamilton-Wenham, in the finals of the schools opening tipoff classic, Amy Bozarjian was the tournament MVP with 13 points as the Spartans, 2-0, pulled away in the second quarter, and again in the final period.Alison McCarthy and Jackie Kapnis had 10 points each, and Kapnis also made the all-tournament team.WRESTLINGSt. John’s Prep went 2-1 in a weekend quad meet, defeating Duxbury 42-31 and Merrimack, N.H., 39-30; but falling to Timberlane, 57-18.Two Eagles were perfect: Ryan Morello (103 pounds) and Ryan Harding (135).Players winning two matches included T.J. Crabtree at 119, Kelley Johnson, 140; Mike Johnson, 189; and Pat Higgins, 215.
