Yes, the Patriots are 13-0 and have three very winnable games remaining on their regular-season schedule, but everyone expected the Pats to be a dominating team in the NFL with stars like Tom Brady, Randy Moss, Mike Vrabel and others lining up every week. The Buffalo Bills are 7-6, securely cemented in second-place in the AFC East and just a game out of the playoffs, and with an unproven quarterback (or two), a pair of untested running backs and an injury list that goes on and on and on, nobody expected anything from the team from Western New York. But, here they are, a bunch of no-name players traveling to Cleveland Sunday for a battle of Lake Erie with a chance to take control of their playoff destiny with three games left.Bills coach Dick Jauron, who was named the Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year following the 2001 season when he led the Chicago Bears to a 13-3 record, has had to overcome enormous obstacles this season including the devastating spinal injury to backup tight end Kevin Everett in the team’s opening game against the Denver Broncos. In all, the Bills have had 13 players placed on injured reserve this year including wide receiver Peerless Price and linebacker Paul Posluszny. The Bills could have quit on Jauron after watching Everett get injured. They did not.The Bills could have quit after starting the year 0-3 including a heartbreaking loss to the Broncos in the game’s final second. They did not. They could have quit after losing 25-24 to the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football. They did not.?We have a tough game in Cleveland this weekend but I know the guys will play hard,” Jauron said in a phone interview Monday. “Our guys never cease to amaze me.”Since the loss to the Cowboys Jauron’s Bills have gone 6-2 and are beginning to believe they can make the playoffs despite the long odds. Since the NFL expanded to a 12-team playoff format in 1990, only three of 204 teams that started the year 0-3 qualified for the tournament. That number could increase to four this year with the Bills grabbing the final playoff spot in the AFC, and if that happens, there is no doubt Jauron should collect his second coach of the year award at the end of the season. In typical Jauron fashion he was quick to spread praise on his players and assistant coaches.?A lot of people are responsible for our season and you have to start with the players,” Jauron said. Our three coordinators n offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild, defensive coordinator Perry Fewell and special teams coordinator Bobby April have done a tremendous job as well as our organization which has done a nice job finding players that fit our team.”Former Patriots coach Bill Parcells on ESPN last week said other than the obvious choices for coach of the year that include Belichick, Wade Phillips and Mike McCarthy, the guy he said you have to take a look at is Jauron. “(He has done) an outstanding job,” Parcells said. “He’s had injuries, rotating quarterbacks and running backs that were hurt but manages to keep his team in there and that is a sign of a very, very well prepared (team) and good coaching job.”There are some people out there in Buffalo who have said the Bills have only done what was expected of them because they have only beaten Miami (0-13) twice, the Jets (3-10) twice, Baltimore (4-9), Cincinnati (5-8) and Washington (6-7) the weekend after Sean Taylor was shot and killed. To them I say the Bills have played the schedule they have been asked to play and should not apologize to anyone. And, when you look at the Monday night game early in the season, the 1-3 Bills had a 24-13 lead on the 4-0 Dallas Cowboys and if not for a Trent Edwards interception the Bills would have walked away with a win over the NFC’s best team. These Bills have been asked to endure a lot more than most NFL teams in a season and the fact they are playing for their playoff lives Sunday in Cleveland speaks volumes to the job Jauron is doing for the Golden Boys (Marv Levy and Ralph Wilson)
