SALEM – A Revere man accused of robbing a convenience store in Lynn two months ago of cash and cigarettes will have to come up with $10,000 cash to get out of the Middleton Jail pending trial.Joseph M. Gorman, 30, of 134 Bellingham Ave., Revere, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a charge of armed robbery before Salem Superior Court Judge Howard J. Whitehead. In setting the same bail as was previously established in district court, Whitehead agreed that the defense may seek a bail review at another court date and continued the case to Jan. 30 for a pretrial conference.Police say it was before 11:30 p.m., on Oct. 12 when a man, later identified as Gorman, walked into the A & A Market at 2 Market Square. At first, the would-be robber lingered around inside the store for a few minutes. The robber then approached the male store clerk, reached into his right jacket pocket and indicated he had something inside, which later turned out to be a can of starter fluid, and demanded money. The clerk turned over approximately $261. Gorman also grabbed three packs of Marlboro cigarettes before fleeing from the store towards South Common Street.Police responding to the scene arrested Gorman a short distance away. The money, cigarettes and a can of starter fluid were found on his person. The store clerk positively identified Gorman as the robber.Assistant District Attorney Karen H. Hopwood is prosecuting the case for the commonwealth.Public defender Julie Buszuwski is his defense lawyer since Gorman has been deemed indigent, meaning he has no money to hire his own attorney. The state will pay all costs, but he must pay $150 towards that legal representation.
