Track Roundup: Locals impress in area meets

Lindsay Walsh had an outstanding performance in the Northeastern Conference’s girls freshman-sophomore meet for Swampscott. She placed first in the 2-mile with a time of 11:56.6, a full 14 seconds before the next competitor would finish. She also placed first in the high jump with a jump of 4-10.Winthrop had two first-place finishers in the trials: Courtney Nolan, 50 (6.7); and Jenny Fucillo, high hurdles (8.0). Marblehead also had two first-place finishers: Mary Keroack, 300 (40.9); and Sarah Bittermann, 600 (1:40.5).The other first-place finishers were: Stephanie Parella, Saugus, shot put (28-3 1/4); Angela Ellison, Peabody, 2-mile (5:43.9); and Abbie Rogers, Gloucester, 1,000 (2:59.2)BOYS TRACKThe St. John’s boys track team took some strong strides in the Brown Invitational on Saturday.The shot put relay team of Josh Tranfaglia, Rob Marrafa and Andrew Valeri placed fifth with a combined total of 125-8. Matt Cullen, Jared Kaditch, Matt Chitro and Sean Hanlon placed sixth in the sprint medley relay, with a time of 3:49.98. Chitro also placed eighth in the high hurdles, while Mike Masse’s 4:33.98 was good for ninth place in the mile.Beverly and Gloucester each scored four first-place finishes in the Northeastern Conference boys freshman-sophomore meet. Beverly winners were: George Louis, high jump (5-5) and 50 (5.9); Tom Lang, 1,000 (2:37.9); and Lucas Benjamin, 2 mile (11:41.4). Gloucester winners were: Kevin Hurd, 600 (1:26); Gus Margiotta, shot put (42-5); Andrew Ryan, mile (4:44.6); and Anthony LaRocca, 300 (36.4).Edwin Mejia of Peabody was the lone first-place finisher not from Beverly or Gloucester. He finished first in the high hurdles with a time of 8.3.
