Revere man arrested on slew of charges

REVERE – A Revere man’s alleged decision Tuesday to drive over 70 mph over the General Edwards Bridge from Lynn into Revere probably wasn’t a good one – given that an off-duty police officer on his way to work was driving right behind him, according to police.Andrew A. Chagaris III, 26, of 31 Central Ave., Revere, was later arrested and now faces a slew of charges including operating under the influence of liquor and motor vehicle theft.Police said Chagaris was driving southbound at 11:40 p.m. on Route 1A in Lynn at speeds over 70 mph when a Revere police officer, driving to work in his personal vehicle, noted the erratic operation. The officer followed the vehicle, a 1997 Honda that was reported stolen from Salem, and watched it crash into a guardrail as it tried to turn off the highway at the Point of Pines exit, police said.Chagaris allegedly continued driving southbound onto Revere Beach Boulevard where State Police troopers were waiting to stop him.Instead, Chagaris allegedly took an illegal right hand turn at Kelly’s Roast Beef, onto Oak Island Street and ran through a red light as he turned back onto Route 1A southbound, narrowly missing another car traveling through the intersection, police said.Police pursued the vehicle as it ran through more red lights and stop signs. The car finally stopped on Neponset Street, which is just past Revere Street, according to police.Chagaris then ran out of the car and hopped backyard fences before being arrested at gunpoint, police said. Before he was arrested, Chagaris allegedly pushed a police officer and threatened to kill him.The female passenger of the car, identified as Shannon M. DiBartolomeo, 21, of 399 Lincoln Ave., Saugus, was also arrested for receiving a stolen vehicle.According to Revere Police Capt. Michael Murphy, the woman was taken into custody because she knew the car had its ignition popped when she got into the vehicle.”The broken ignition was clearly visible from her vantage point as a passenger in the front seat,” Murphy said.Chagaris was charged with failing to stop for police, larceny of a vehicle, resisting arrest, assault and battery on a police officer, threatening to commit a crime, OUI liquor, reckless operation of a vehicle, driving with a suspended license and an outstanding warrant.
