Roundup: Clifford, DiPanfilo lead Fenwick boys hoop team

Just call Mike Clifford and Nolan DiPanfilo the dynamic duo these days. The two combined for 33 points to lead the Bishop Fenwick boys basketball team to a 52-49 win over Austin Prep Wednesday at Fenwick.DiPanfilo was red-hot from the perimeter, burying five 3-pointers to finish with 19 points. Clifford provided the muscle in the paint, scoring 14 points and blocking six shots. The two were also impressive in the Nashoba Valley Tech Christmas Tournament over the weekend. Clifford had 28 points and 22 rebounds and DiPanfilo had 23 points to help the Crusaders to a 68-60 win over Nashoba in the tournament championship game. Clifford earned MVP honors for his performance and DiPanfilo was named to the all-tournament team.Clifford found himself in foul trouble early against Austin Prep, but still managed to do some serious damage. Phil Eagan (9 points) had 12 rebounds.Peabody 55, Chelsea 51At Chelsea, the Tanners (2-5, 1-3 Northeastern Conference North) found themselves trailing by 10 points in the third quarter, but they turned the tide thanks to a 12-3 run. Peabody took the lead in the final minute on a Mark Linehan drive to the hoop.Max Steinberger led the Peabody pack with 16 points (12 in the second half). Dan Mello had eight points, six in the fourth quarter, and Gary Girolamo (6 points) went 4-for-4 from the line down the stretch. He also had five assists.GIRLS BASKETBALLFenwick 56, Tewksbury 54At Tewksbury, junior point guard Bridget Dullea scored 23 points to keep a scrappy Tewksbury team at bay. Fenwick led by five points with five seconds remaining, only to see the Redmen close the gap to two with a 3-pointer launched near halfcourt. The Crusaders got the ball back, were fouled and made the shot to ice the win.Lauran DiCarlo had 10 points for Fenwick (2-4) and freshman Amy Pelletier was impressive with nine points.BOYS TRACKM’head 66, Winthrop 18At Marblehead, the Magicians (3-0) had firsts from Jacob Evanter, 55 hurdles (8.1); Mike Sahagian, 55 dash (6.8); Mike DiFillippo, 300 meters (42.0); Dan November, 600 meters (1:31.9); Andrew Graf, 1,000 (2:57.9); Tucker Reese, mile (5:16) and Tyler Smith, 2-mile (11:00). Marblehead plays Danvers Wednesday.St. John’s (S) 64,St. John’s (D) 31At the Reggie Lewis Center, Mike Massey won the mile (4:35) and took second in the 1,000 and Sean Hanlon took seconds in the long jum0p (19-5) and the 600 (1:25) for the Eagles (1-1). Josh Tranfaglia won the shot put (44-3) and sophomore Jared kaditch took third in the 300 (37.98).Peabody 75, English 11At Peabody, the Tanners (2-0) had personal best performances in the shot put from Kevin Bettencourt (44-5) and Nour Shahin (42-4), who finished 1-2. Freshman David Riley won the 2-mile (13:52); Shawn Cronin, the 1,000 (2:42); Jordan Hoofnagle, 600 (1:27); and Michael Berlangieri, high jump (5-10).GIRLS TRACKM’head 57, Winthrop 29At Marblehead, the Magicians (3-0) picked up firsts from Katie Herlihy in the 2-mile (13:23); Amy Federman, 1,000 meters (3:41); Mary Keroack, 300 meters (46.4); Jess Sasso, 55 meters (7.7); Catherine Slattery, 55 hurdles (9.5) and Maggie McMullen, high jump (4-8). Both McMullen and Federman recorded personal bests in their wins.SWIMMINGNortheast 96, Tech 76At Lynn Tech, the Tigers (1-2) had firsts from Marcos Castellano in diving (171.3 points) and Yulia Shebalina, 100 breaststroke (1:41.6). Chris Miglierino, who swam for Lynn Tech for two years before transferring to Northeast Regional as a junior, set a pool record in the 100 free. The old record, set by Marblehead in 2001, was 50.85. Miglierina’s time was 49.94. The former Lynn Tech swimmer also holds the boys pool record in the back stroke.The Tigers also had strong performances by Mike Leone, who trimmed five seconds off his time in the 100 back, and Sean Norris, who cut seven seconds off his 100 fly time.
