Swampscott school board shifts meeting night to Thursdays

January 4, 2008 by dglidden

SWAMPSCOTT-The School Committee is changing its meeting days starting this month.School Committee Chairman David Whelan said the members of the School Committee agreed to meet on Thursdays instead of Tuesdays to accommodate Superintendent Matthew Malone and his staff.?It is easier for Malone and his staff to put the agenda and packets of information together at the beginning of each week,” he said. “That way there is not the interruption of the weekend.”Whelan also said when the committee met on Tuesdays it was sometimes difficult to get the meetings posted in time to comply with the state Open Meeting Law.The Open Meeting Law requires public meetings be posted 72 hours prior to the meeting and Whelan said having the meeting on Thursdays would allow meetings to be posted at the beginning of each week instead of on a Friday when Town Hall closes early. The Daily Item runs listings of municipal meetings every Monday so Swampscott School Committee meetings may not be available in the listings because the district would not be required to post a meeting scheduled for Thursday evening until Monday evening.Whelan said he doesn’t expect that to be an issue because the School Committee is posting meetings weeks in advance. The next regularly scheduled School Committee meeting is slated for Thursday, Jan. 10 at the high school.
