Underwood, Tech blast Greater Lowell

Senior forward Jessica Underwood scored a career high 31 points to lead the Tech girls basketball team to a 60-40 win over Greater Lowell Friday at Tyngsboro.”Jessica had a very good game,” Tech coach John Crowley said. ” She got most of her points down low, on breakaways and layups after steals. She moved well with and without the ball and she shot well from the foul line (7-for-9).”The Tigers (1-3) also got a lift from Katrina Freeman, who scored 14 points and had five assists. Tech led 34-17 at the half and never let the Gryphons much closer.St. Mary’s 35, Ursuline 24At Lynn, the Spartans (5-4) played their best defense of the year according to coach Jeff Newhall and the effort paid off. Junior guard Alison McCarthy was top gun for St. Mary’s with 12 points. Tori Faieta had nine points and 13 boards and freshman forward Cassie Amenta contributed eight points.Winthrop 81, Saugus 61At Saugus, the Sachems put up a good fight but the Vikings had too many weapons to silence. Liz Dean led Saugus (1-7) with 18 points and Diana Davis was good for 13 points.”I was very happy with the way we came to play,” Saugus coach Paul Zermani said, adding the 61 points was the most his team has scored since he’s been coaching.Winthrop, which hadn’t played in two weeks, shook off the cobwebs and finished with four players in double figures. Courtney Finn and Katarina Mallios each had 22 points; Nicole Giaquinta had 17 points and Kristen Finn added 16 points. The Vikings are 5-1.Peabody 64, Revere 33At Peabody, the Tanners (5-0) shared the wealth with 11 players getting on the board. Michelle Grifoni was top dog with 13 points, followed by Jaclyn Egitto with 10 and Katie Henrick with nine. Janelle Rodriguez had eight points and did a nice job on the boards. Christina Cavagnaro led the Patriots with 12 points.Triton 39, Lynnfield 25At Lynnfield, the Pioneers (1-7) had didn’t have an answer for Triton’s Nicki Wurdeman. The Babson-bound Wurdeman had 18 points and about the same number of rebounds.”They just pounded it inside on us,” Lynnfield coach Bill Adams said.Alison Newell led Lynnfield with nine points, but found herself sitting for a good chunk of the game due to foul trouble.Fenwick 48, Arlington 21At Arlington, Bridge Dullea led the Fenwick assault once again, scoring 19 points, but coach Tim Harrington was just as pleased with the team defense. The Crusaders are 3-4.Danvers 52, Gloucester 40At Gloucester, Danielle Sherry scored 22 points and Bailey Potter tossed in eight with three steals and five rebounds for the Falcons. .”We played our best game of the year,” Danvers coach Pat Veilleux said.Hannah Cain supplied the offense for the Fishermen with 12 points. Both teams are 4-3.Salem 61, Beverly 48At Salem, Ashley White had the hot hand for the Witches, scoring 22 points, and Amanda Wilkins added 10.Although Salem won by 13 points, the Panthers were in this one most of the way.The scored was tied at 44 in the fourth before Salem (3-5) started to pull away for good.Swampscott 69, M’head 34At Marblehead, the Big Blue (7-1) got to play everyone in this one, with Tara Nimkar (17 points) and Allie Beaulieu (16) leading the way.Coach Jack Hughes said that Jen Cleary (9 points) played well defensively. She also had four assists.Tara Gallagher had four points and six rebounds.
