Boys hockey: Saugus beats Beverly in impressive fashion

The Saugus’ boys hockey made a large statement to the rest of the Northeastern Conference Saturday.The Sachems took down third ranked Beverly (Divison 2) in convincing fashion, 5-0.”We have the utmost respect for Beverly,” Saugus coach Chris Conners said. “We knew that goals would be at a premium. We preached that we would have to come out and play physical.”Joe Vechionne and Ryan McManus had huge offensive nights, both scoring a pair of goals and adding an assist. Mike Scuzzarella also had an impressive night with three assists.Steve Spinney scored the games final goal in the final minute.”The guys did a great job forechecking and taking the body all night,” Conners said. “We also limited the the outsided shots.”Saugus actually outshot the Panthers 26-12.Paul Essery picked up his second shut out of the season.Winthrop 2, Revere 1At Revere, the Vikings (2-2-1, 2-5-1) entered the third period in a 1-0 hole. However, Alex Hamilton scored a goal and assist in the third period. Ken Hodgekins picked up the other other goal. Patrick Seeley had an outstanding performance in net.Xaverian 3, St. John’s 2At Peabody, Christian Cowles scored a pair of goals in the losing effort. Colin Prior and Dan Haugh each had an assist. Eric CLifford turned away 32 shots for the Eagles (4-2-1).Swampscott 3, Salem 0At Rockett Arena, Keith Morgan scored a pair of goals in the third period for the Big Blue (3-3-2). Cody Grondin had an amazing performance in net for the Witches, turning away 44 shots. Swampscott outshot the Witches 47-15.Fenwick 8, St. Clement 3At Peabody, Jordan Mizioch and John Luti each had hat tricks for Crusaders (4-1-1). Both also had a pair of assists to add to their great days. Chris Renzulli had five assists on the day. Blaine THibodeau turned away 15 shots.Tech 11, South Boston 1At Lynn, Just COlontuoni scored a pair of goals to lead the Tigers (3-5) offense. Jesse Wilkens and Michael Donovan each also had standout performances.Springfield Cath 7, St Mary’s 1At Springfield, Zak Borowski scored the Spartans (5-2-1)lone goal.
