Roundup: St. Mary’s boys hoop rallies to beat Williams

The St. Mary’s boys basketball team found itself playing catch-up all night against Archbishop Williams, but the effort paid off with a 60-56 win at Braintree.The Bishops led by four at the half and by three after three quarters, but the Spartans had the firepower in the fourth. Tyler Grillo led the effort with 16 points and John Bakopolus checked in with 15 points. Bakopulos came up big when he stole the ball with 12 seconds remaining and then hit two free throws to put St. Mary’s up by two points.The Bishops had one more shot at tying the game, but no go. The Spartans’ Alex Mitchell scored with time running out for the four-point margin.”It was close the entire game. It was probably one of the best games in my tenure here,” St. Mary’s coach Kevin Moran said.St. Mary’s did a nice job on the boards led by Mitchell (11 rebounds) and Harpler. Mike Puglielli was a key factor defensively with five steals.”This was a huge win,” Moran said, noting that the Bishops were undefeated in the Catholic Central League coming into the game.BOYS TRACKSalem 62, English 24At Gloucester, the Witches had this one under control early. English picked up two firsts, from Chris Stanton in the 50 hurdles (8.6) and Camy Ducasse in the 300 (36.8), but Salem took the top spot in every other spot. Ben Dibble won the high jump (5-7); Ryan MacKenzie, the shot put (33-61/2); Mike Ngarambe, the 50 (5.7); Niko Takis-Welch, 600 (1:23); Matt Heggi, 1,000 (2:45.7); Mike Steeves, mile (5:22.1) and Steven Levesque, 2-mile (12:24.5). English is 1-4, 0-3 Northeastern Conference Large.Gloucester 83, Winthrop 3At Gloucester, the Fishermen swept all but one event led by double winner Austin Souza, who took first in the 1,000 (2:29) and first in the high jump (5-7). Winthrop’s Kareem Thompson spoiled the run with a second place in the 50 (6.0).GIRLS TRACKSalem 49, English 36At Gloucester, the Bulldogs (0-5, 0-3) had some solid performances. Bianca Fowler won the high jump (4-5) and the 50 (9.4); Megan Forti won the 300 (44.5) and Alex Henry, the 600 (1:46). Jenna Henry took second in the 1,000 (3:30.3); Shakira Llewellyn, second in the 50, and Cara Crowley, second in the shot put (22-5 3/4). English also won the relay.Salem’s Tatyana Janes won the shot put (26-1 3/4); Kayla Banville, the 50 hurdles (9.4); Tania Machado, the 1,000 (3:25.4); Susie Barnes, mile (6:13.9); and Raji Syeda, the 2-mil3 (14:30).Gloucester 46, Winthrop 40At Gloucester, Winthrop’s Jenny Fucillo won the 50 hurdles (7.8); Courtney Nolan, the 50 (6.4); Amber Miller, the 300 (44.0); Julie Dowson, the 600 (1:43.2) and Kaitlyn Hersey, the 2-mile (14:04), but the Fishermen prevailed, sparked by a sweep in the 1,000. Gloucester is 1-3, 1-2 NEC Small and Winthrop is 2-3, 0-3 NEC Small.
