SALEM – Saugus woman charged with assisting William Carey in escaping from police after he allegedly stabbed his ex-wife 21 times in front of their son four months ago, remains free on her own personal promise to return to court with specific conditions.Noel Lozada, 35, of 42 Jackson St., appeared Tuesday in Salem Superior Court answering not guilty to a charge of accessory after the fact.As jointly recommended by the prosecutor and defense, Judge David A. Lowy agreed that she remain free on personal recognizance with pretrial conditions that include having no contact with Carey?s ex-wife or children, stay at least 100 yards from their home at 6 Cliff St., in Lynn, and report weekly to probation by telephone while her case is pending. In asking Lowy for the pretrial conditions, Assistant District Attorney Kate B. MacDougall said the case stems from an incident in Lynn on Sept. 27 when William Carey, 38, went to his ex-wife?s home at 6 Cliff St., and stabbed his estranged wife, Susan Carey, 21 times while she was sleeping in bed with their 7-year-old son.It was about 4:45 a.m. when Lynn police rushed to Cliff Street, after the couple?s 7-year-old son came out of his home, screaming “Call 911, My mother is dead. My father killed her.”Police rushed to the scene and found Susan Carey, 37, sitting on her front porch, alive, but nearly unconscious with 21 stab wounds.Carey was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and treated for a collapsed right lung along with numerous lacerations. She currently is recovering from the extensive injuries, MacDougall said.Carey was arrested about 90 minutes later in the woods off Jackson Street in Saugus. The commonwealth contends that Lozada, the girlfriend of William Carey, helped him to escape from authorities following the brutal attack. She is due back in court on Jan. 23 for a pretrial conference.Carey remains held on bail at the Middleton Jail pending trial.
