Evidently the English boys basketball team learned from its great escape at Swampscott on Tuesday as the Bulldogs came out with vengeance on Friday at the Paul F. Cavanagh Field House against Winthrop.Holding the Vikings to 25 points in the final three quarters, English clinched a state tournament berth by taking Winthrop behind the woodshed, 66-41.”Our offense started off slow and then picked it up,” English coach Buzzy Barton said. “Our defense was really good (Friday).”That defense held Viking star Dino Mallios to just six points and two field goals while the offense broke open a 24-16 game after one quarter.Jeremy Subervi led English’s (10-2) offense with 16 points.
