Chase starts in Revere, ends in Wakefield

REVERE – A man driving a white van wouldn’t stop for Revere police without a fight Tuesday when he led officers on a chase all the way to Wakefield.Revere and State Police called off the chase after the van struck a box truck on Main Street in Wakefield, causing minor damage.”Needless to say he didn’t stop to exchange paper work,” Revere Police Capt. Michael Murphy said.The pursuit began shortly after 1 p.m. when a Revere police officer noticed the van making several driving infractions on American Legion Highway near Revere Street and tried to pull the vehicle over, police said.The driver was described as a white male, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and brown hair and facial hair.Police said the van sped through Brown Circle onto Squire Road before driving through Malden, Melrose and Wakefield. He drove through Linden Square in Malden onto Salem Street through Maplewood Square, then traveled westbound on Main Street through Malden, Melrose and into Wakefield, according to police.”The operator was clearly not going to stop without being engaged,” Murphy said. “It was quite clear he had no intention of stopping that vehicle without crashing.”After police called off the chase, officers tried to contact the van’s registered owner, a woman who lives on Bristow Street in Saugus.As of press time, the suspect was still at large.Murphy said State Police and Malden police officers also joined the chase before it was called off.
